How Melt Value Is Calculated

Melt value is the worth of the pure gold in a piece: weight × purity × spot price. Spot is quoted per troy ounce of pure gold, so the weight is first converted to troy ounces of fine gold. Ten grams of 18K gold holds 7.5 g of pure gold, about 0.241 troy ounces.

Karat And Purity

Karat is parts of gold in 24. 18K is 18/24 = 75% gold; 14K is 58.3%. Hallmarks round these figures — 14K is usually stamped 585 and 10K 417 — and a refiner pays on the actual assay, so enter a fineness if you know it.

  • 24K — 99.9% (999)
  • 22K — 91.6% (916)
  • 18K — 75% (750)
  • 14K — 58.3% (585)
  • 10K — 41.7% (417)

Melt Value Is A Floor, Not A Price

Melt value ignores stones, craftsmanship and brand, which is why finished jewelry sells well above it. It also isn't what a refiner or buyer pays: they offer a percentage of melt to cover refining and margin. Use the payout field to estimate an offer.

Know How Much Gold You Are Holding

Mero keeps the karat, gross weight and net metal weight of every piece as real fields, so the gold in your inventory is a figure you can look up, not a stack of tags to weigh again.

FAQ

Common Questions.

How do I calculate the value of gold jewelry?
Multiply the weight by the purity to get the pure gold content, convert it to troy ounces, and multiply by the spot price. That is the melt value; finished jewelry is usually worth more because of its stones and craftsmanship.
Where does the spot price come from?
Spot is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure gold. This calculator does not fetch it — enter the price from the source you trust, in the currency you want the answer in.
Why is a buyer's offer lower than melt value?
Refiners and buyers pay a percentage of melt to cover assay, refining and their margin. The payout field estimates an offer at the percentage you enter.
Should I use gross weight or net metal weight?
Net metal weight — the gold alone. Gross weight includes stones and any non-gold parts, which would overstate the gold content.
