What Makes A Good Jewelry SKU

A SKU should identify one product and nothing else, read the same way every time, and survive being typed, printed on a tag and imported into another system. Short codes in a fixed order do all three.

  • Letters and numbers only — no spaces, slashes or accents
  • A fixed order: type, then metal and karat, then stone, then a number
  • A number padded to a set length, so 0009 sorts before 0010
  • Never reuse a SKU, even for a discontinued piece

Describe Lightly, Number Uniquely

Codes in the SKU make it readable at a glance, but the details — exact weight, stone carats, certificate number — belong in the product record, not the SKU. Keep the descriptive part short and let the sequence number make each SKU unique.

One Style Or One Piece?

Decide early whether a SKU names a style you restock or a single one-of-a-kind piece. Restocked styles share a SKU and carry a stock count; unique pieces each get their own. Mixing the two in one numbering run is what makes inventory counts drift.

Mero

Keep Every SKU Next To The Piece It Names

In Mero, each product's SKU sits alongside its metal, karat, weights, stones, photos and stock history. Bring your existing SKUs in from Excel or CSV — Mero maps your columns and lets you review the import before anything is written.

FAQ

Common Questions.

What should a jewelry SKU include?
A short code for the piece type, the metal and karat, optionally a stone code, and a unique sequence number. Keep detailed attributes in the product record rather than the SKU.
How long should a SKU be?
Short enough to type and fit on a tag — usually under 16 characters. The generator caps each part to letters and digits to keep SKUs compact.
Should SKUs include the price?
No. Prices change; a SKU should not. Put the price in the product record.
